The Makueni Environmental Conservation Shift Initiative (MECOSI) is a community-based organization (CBO) founded in 2020 in Kanaani/Nthangu village, Makueni County, Kenya by a group of dedicated individuals passionate about environmental conservation and sustainable farming. The initiative began with a tree-planting program to combat deforestation and global warming in the semi-arid Makueni County. The organization evolved from a self-help group to a community-based organization in response to growing environmental challenges and community needs and now a recognized leader in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
MECOSI’s activities have expanded to include water conservation, sustainable poultry farming, advocacy for peace, and capacity building. The transformation into a CBO has allowed the group to formalize its operations, attract partners, and access additional resources to scale its impact.
Notable milestones include:
• Establishing a tree seedling nursery that supplies saplings to local farmers and institutions.
• Partnering with the Makueni County Government to support water harvesting initiatives.
• Mobilizing over 200 community members to participate in environmental restoration activities.
The organization is dedicated to mitigating the effects of climate change through initiatives such as tree planting, water harvesting, and sustainable agricultural practices.
MECOSI aims to empower the community economically, socially, and environmentally by promoting climate-smart solutions that enhance livelihoods while protecting natural resources. Through strategic partnerships with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities, MECOSI works to implement impactful conservation programs.
Under the leadership of its visionary chairperson, Mr. Benjamin Mbelenzi, the organization is committed to fostering community participation and driving sustainable change. By integrating environmental conservation with economic empowerment, MECOSI continues to play a crucial role in promoting resilience and sustainability in Makueni County.
